The NSFW Bundle – Sizzling, Sleazy, Seductive Fun!

How hot is too hot? Undo those buttons, recline and take your time to explore a bursting bundle of edgy, fun, sex-positive sights and sounds.

BDSM star, activist and educator Madison Young presents this potent concoction of cult sleaze on celluloid, great games, hot music and enthralling ebooks that tickle, tease, stroke and smack their way around the subject of sex, or throb with unquenched desire and wild abandon.

Available for 15 days only, from 21 February to 07 March, VODO’s NSFW Bundle is here to engorge your curiosity with: a digitally remastered sexploitation classic (Vampire Hookers) and bare-naked tale of sex on celluloid (A Labor Of Love); simmering tales of burlesque seduction in sumptuous HD (Cabaret Desire); three games of pleasure tactics, pent-up anticipation and libidinal lunacy (Seduce Me, Dinner Date and My Girlfriend is the President); two hot, too-cool EPs in hi-intensity, hi-def FLAC format and Mp3 (Animal Chuki, LA Vampires); and three tightly gripping reads and romps (Jess Fink’s Chester 5000, Girlvert by Ashley Blue and Daddy by Madison Young). For the first thousand Premium sales, there’s a one week entry ticket to Erika Lust’s xconfessions message board, where you can share your deepest sexual secrets for a chance to have them brought to life in an erotic short film.

This brimming bottle of burning hot sauce combines over $120 worth of high-quality cross-media to entertain, educate, amuse and arouse.

Madison Young, Author of BDSM memoir, Daddy, commented:

Sex-positive means healthy sexual communication, authenticity, finding a sense of sexual wellness. All of the images that bombard us on a daily basis, on billboards and in commercials, are constantly telling us ‘this is what you should look like’, ‘this is who you should be’ and––when it comes to porn––that you’d better be squealing in this way, be able to get your legs over your shoulders, take it in all of your orifices at the same time and act like you like it. I try to undo all of that. Believe in whoever you are inside and amplify it! Thanks for taking a look at the Not Safe For Work bundle––I hope you find something you like!

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES

70% of contributions are divided between our fabulous content providers, 25% goes to VODO and 5% goes to our chosen charity, The Center For Sex and Culture. Based in San Francisco, USA, this award-winning nonprofit offers judgment-free education and events to audiences across the sexual and gender spectrum, as well as framing and informing issues of public policy and public health.

PARTNERS IN ART

VODO is proud to present an ongoing series of Artists’ Moving Image works, curated in collaboration with Michael Cousin/Outcasting (Cardiff, UK) and supported by the Arts Council of Wales. The programme has previously shown work by Darren Banks and accompanying the NSFW Bundle are works by Cristine Brache and Miguel Maldonado.

The Big Brother Bundle, Curated By Daniel Domscheit-Berg (ex-Wikileaks)

The word is out: we’re all being watched. It’s never been more important to think about our privacy — and how governments and corporations are invading it.

VODO asked one of the original members of Wikileaks, Daniel Domscheit-Berg, to help curate the unique, one-off bundle of content around the theme of Big Brother. It brings together indie creators, authors and experts on one of the most important issues of the day and is available for 20 days only, starting October 30.

VODO’s Big Brother Bundle contains two essential documentaries fresh from major film festivals (Shadows of Liberty, Secrecy), award-winning graphic novels (The Homeland Directive, Subatomic), highly rated Steam games (I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Hacker Evolution: Duality), original music from conscious hip-hop star Immortal Technique (Surveillance EP), a book from privacy guru Bruce Scheneier (Schneier on Security), and, for the first 10,000 “Beat The Average” customers, 3 months online privacy from well-respected VPN provider iPredator. The bundle also sees the launch of a partnership between VODO and Outcasting agency for artist’s moving image, supported by the Arts Council of Wales, to include artist’s film and video with VODO releases. The Big Brother Bundle will feature Removable Media, a short found-video work by UK-based artist Darren Banks.

We’re proud to have brought together over $145 worth of content in the bundle – and a great combination of fun, information and creativity.
Daniel Domscheit-Berg, author of Wikileaks: My Years With Julian Assange, commented:

“I’m delighted to be involved in this exciting bundle. It’s an important time for us all to be thinking about these issues – and this is a great way to get in touch with the issues, collect some great, fun content and support independent creators distributing their work in a truly innovative way.”

Daniel’s biography is the basis of the new film The 5th Estate. He lives and works in Berlin Germany.

Lovecraft / Cthulhu Trans-Media Bundle Goes Live On VODO – 3 Week Special Offer

Grab this awesome Pay-What-You-Want collection of trans-media treats inspired by the writings and mythos of cult American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, including film, indie games, ezines, ebooks, audio books and more, only on VODO!

For the as yet uninitiated, here is a good explanation of Lovecraft’s style from Wikipedia: ‘Lovecraftian horror is a sub-genre of horror fiction which emphasizes the psychological horror of the unknown (in some cases, unknowable) over gore or other elements of shock, though these may still be present… The hallmark of Lovecraft’s work was the sense that ordinary life was a thin shell over a reality which was so alien and abstract in comparison that merely contemplating it would damage the sanity of the ordinary person.’

The bundle includes the following goodies:

Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land(Android & PC Game), courtesy of Red Wasp Design
Cthulhu Saves the World (PC Game), courtesy of Zeboyd Games
Die Farbe / The Colour Out Of Space (Film), courtesy of BrinkVision
Innsmouth Magazine, Collected Issues 1-4 / 5-7 (eBooks), courtesy of Innsmouth Free Press
Lovecraft Audio Books Packs 1 & 2 (mp3 audio), courtesy of The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company
Lovecraft eZine, 2 x Annual Megapacks, 2011/2012 (eBooks), courtesy of The Lovecraft eZine
Sherlock Holmes: The Awakening (PC Game), courtesy of Frogwares

Curated by Tomas Rawlings of Red Wasp Design, this special offer is available from VODO on a time-limited basis from August 1 to August 18 and can be tweeted about via the hashtag #CthulhuBundle.

Tomas remarked:

“This is a really exciting bundle that reflects the fact that fans like myself aren’t only interested in one medium; we like games, films, books and audio and are happy to have Cthulhu on all of these and more! Each of the things selected here is something that personally I’m a huge fan of so am really pleased to see them all in one collection.”

70% of contributions are divided equally between the 7 content providers, 25% goes to VODO and 5% goes to our chosen charity for this offer, Fight For The Future. Fight for the Future is dedicated to protecting and expanding the Internet’s transformative power in our lives by creating civic campaigns that are engaging for millions of people.

ONE MILE AWAY

(Free-To-Share Download / Support-And-Stream)

TWO WARRING GANGS, ONE MESSAGE OF PEACE: A FEATURE DOCUMENTARY

Director: Penny Woolcock
Year: 2012
Duration: 01:31
Language: English / English subs

This Michael Powell Award-winning documentary charts the attempts by two warring gangs in inner city Birmingham (UK) – the Burger Bar Boys and the Johnson Crew – to bring peace to their neighbourhoods.

The film follows Penny Woolcock’s Hip Hop musical, 1 Day, which depicted these postcode (zipcode) wars. One Mile Away was initiated by Shabba, a young man affiliated to the Johnson side who met Penny during her research for 1 Day. He saw her as neutral and as someone who had built trust on both sides. Penny agreed to get involved and introduced Shabba to Dylan Duffus – the lead actor in 1 Day and affiliated to the Burger side.

On their painstaking journey over two years, recruiting more supporters from both gangs, Shabba and Dylan get advice from Jonathan Powell, who oversaw the Good Friday Agreement in the Northern Ireland peace process, and riots erupt in Birmingham in Summer 2011, with surprising consequences.

Supported and distributed by BRITDOC Films, and co-funded by Channel 4 and Creative England, One Mile Away shows how film and the determination of ordinary people can transform entrenched social problems, whilst also being compelling, ground-breaking viewing. One Mile Away is now also a developing social enterprise, working with schools to reduce gang culture in the UK.

A riveting portrait of the complex, contentious reality of the streets, and the courage it takes to make a difference, it could well be this year’s most important British film
Time Out

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER

Penny Woolcock has been directing award-winning documentaries, feature films and opera for the stage for twenty years. Her recent work includes On The Streets (2010) a film about homeless people on the streets of London and 1 Day (2009) about a day in the life of an inner city hustler.

AWARDS / SCREENINGS

Winner, Michael Powell Ward, Edinburgh Film Festival 2012
Official Selection, Sheffield Doc Fest

ONE MILE AWAY – THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

The work that Shabba and Dylan started didn’t stop with the finished film. A group of men from both the Burgers and the Johnsons have formed a social enterprise to take the message of the film into schools and to bring about change in areas around the country most affected by gang violence.

Its founders, Zimbo, Tobeijah and YT, were heavily involved in the gang life style but are now seeking another way to inspire their peers and the generation that follows them. They feel that the postcode wars are just a symptom of a larger social problem and the negative mentality of young people in their community. Their work will focus on engaging youth and gang members with the aim of stimulating a change in this mentality, which has held their communities in a state of destruction for the last twenty years.

Their work is supported by the Bertha FoundationBRITDOCThe Prince’s Trust and a generous group of individuals who recognise how important it is for change to grow from the inside. They are currently piloting their programme in schools around the UK.

We’re doing something amazing… (or VODO is DOWN!)

If you’ve been checking back at VODO lately you might have gotten a bit bored with the same old film appearing on the front page (although we hope you’ve checked out Deadside by now) and it might have seemed like nothing much is going on. However, nothing can be further from the truth – in the last few months we’ve been working very hard behind the scenes and are almost ready to bring you the next iteration of VODO, version 3.0!

The VODO code base

We’ve basically been running VODO on the same TurboGears code base for the last 3 years. As the site has swelled and new functionality has been introduced it was pretty clear that we needed a fresh start. So VODO 3.0 is pretty much rewritten from scratch in Django, and we’re also employing some more modern frontend tools such as SASS and Sprockets.

Server backend

If you’ve been with us for a while you probably know that our server uptime hasn’t always been the best, especially when there has been any major release. For VODO 3.0 we have bought new machines and our new web server and tracker will be fully scalable and will handle whatever you guys can throw at them. Bring it on.

Submissions

Another big problem have been how we handle publisher accounts and submissions, and due to lacking tools and manual handling of requests the process of uploading a film to and distributing it through VODO has sometimes taken way too long. With VODO 3.0 we’re opening up the submission process to anyone and with a new transcoder and submission process in place things should be much quicker and provide much more tangible feedback to anyone who wants to distribute their work through us.

Business model

We like to try new things and have already tried a lot! While staying true to our free-to-share core, with VODO 3.0 we will soon be launching some very interesting new distribution models.

VODO Player

One of the problems with our free-to-share model has always been how newcomers struggle with the concept of torrent downloads and encoders such as h.264. To combat this problem, one of the most exciting things that will follow 3.0 is the launch of our very own VODO Player, a combined torrent client and video player that will enable anyone to download and watch our films on their desktop. Watch this space.

When?

3.0 should be live within a day or two and in the meantime we’re shutting down vodo.net so we can migrate all the data and user accounts (you will not have to register a new account and all your data and films will be carried over to the new server). Initially we’re launching with pretty much the same feature set we have today – but expect new things to appear on the site very soon. Film submissions will be put on hold for a while longer while we get the new upload process and transcoder online but we’ll keep everyone informed via email and here on the blog.

Bugs!

It is quite likely that things will be broken and/or a bit rough around the edges in the next couple of weeks. Sorry in advance about that. Publishers might be hit harder than normal users – rest assured it’s just temporary. If you find anything missing or broken please do get in touch at info@vodo.net and we’ll try and sort it out as soon as we can!

Cheers,
Nils

Warring Factions – A Story Of Breakdancing Across US/Iranian Divides, Free-To-Share On VODO

Director: Justin Mashouf
Year: 2010
Duration: 77 minutes
Language: English / Farsi with English subs

As forces in American government and media have fueled the perception of an unavoidable war with Iran, Warring Factions is a call to (dis)arms.

An American-born Iranian breakdancer finds cultural awakening by exploring his multi-ethnic roots. Faced with dual nationality in two conflicting countries, he travels to Iran to examine the political issues first-hand while exploring his cultural identity with a group of Iranian b-boys.

By combining documentary and studio reenactments, Warring Factions looks at the blurring of world borders, and the looming threat of another war in the Middle East.

Thoughtful, imaginative and open, Justin Mashouf seems to represent the new generation of Muslims in the Middle East and U.S. that balance Islamic culture with hip, contemporary lifestyles.

Till You Get To Baraboo – An Indie Rom Com, Free-To-Share On VODO

FREE-TO-SHARE DOWNLOAD /
SUPPORT-AND-SHARE STREAMING

Director: Emmet Loverde
Year: 2012
Duration: 79m
Language: English

It’s new territory for VODO in this Spotlight Valentine’s Day Special: indie Rom Com!

It’s the eve of the Las Vegas wedding of his close friend Judy Claymore and Roland Hayes (Bill Mendieta) juggles a host of conflicting emotions while pacing in his hotel room. He is amazed by the arrival of the bride-to-be herself (Jennifer Siebel Newsom), but much unfinished business remains between them.

Their joyful reunion is interrupted by a gruff Delivery Man (Tom Schanley) bearing Roland’s order of Chinese food and a truckload of wry observations on women, relationships, and why a Sinatra ballad is ideal for disrupting a wedding ceremony.

Over the course of the weekend Roland is visited–’confronted’ is probably a better word–by all the special women from his past in a series of surreal and hilarious vignettes. Grappling with his reluctance to move beyond them and his fears about the future, will Roland able to let go of worn-out old dreams and make room for new ones?

Loverde has managed something I’ve never seen before, taking the pain and hurt of an ended relationship and making it tangible. As Roland is reminded and is confronted by old girlfriends, you can’t help but think back on your own past and wonder about the choices and mistakes you’ve made. It’s a wonderful movie that will have you sitting by the Kleenex…even if it’s only out of genuine self-pity!  Brian Moreton, roguecinema.com
